GEO optimization for online stores and consumer brands

An AI assistant recommends your product, yet the customer buys the same model on a marketplace. I help online retailers and manufacturers understand how AI answers select products, merchants and offers, then plan improvements to the website and the evidence available online.

I study actual customer questions: what to buy, which brand fits the need, and where to order a specific SKU. Product facts, price, availability, warranty, service and cited sources are checked before priorities are agreed.

Challenges for retailers and marketing directors

The product is recommended. Which merchant receives the order?

A product mention does not establish who captures the sale. Manufacturers also need to know whether AI connects a suitable product to its brand and to the right purchase options.

01

AI recommends competing products

A buyer asks for a coffee machine under a specific budget with reliable after-sales support. AI recommends suitable alternatives, while your range is missing from the shortlist.

02

The product appears without your store

AI recommends a relevant SKU, but customers look for a seller separately. Warranty, service and shipping benefits of your online store may never enter the decision.

03

An incorrect variant drives the price comparison

Different sizes, packs or models appear in the same comparison. A broad marketplace category page may be mistaken for the price of an exact SKU.

04

Your advantages lack verifiable evidence

Delivery, support, loyalty benefits and merchant warranties influence buying decisions when facts are accessible through your site and credible third-party sources.

The objective is to improve relevant product recommendations and give buyers a well-grounded merchant comparison, measured against actual AI answers and business outcomes.

From GAEO research · anonymized retail audits

What initial audits reveal about lost recommendations

Two separate diagnostic projects examined consumer electronics and everyday retail products. The observations below are anonymized and represent baseline findings. Client identities and commercial details are withheld.

E2

Baseline diagnostic evidence; implementation outcomes are tracked separately

Findings from the diagnostics

  • In one retail audit, product categories differed markedly in brand mentions and shortlist presence.
  • In another, an AI assistant quoted a marketplace price supported only by a broad category link. The exact SKU price had not been established.
  • Some marketplace offers genuinely win on value. The resulting work should focus on real strengths and accurate information.

The original samples used different questions and methods, so they are kept separate. These are baseline observations, with no claim of resulting revenue growth.

The customer journey

Where product and merchant recommendations can fail

A question set covers the buyer journey from selecting a suitable item to finding the right seller and offer. Each stage is measured separately.

Alexey Yakovlev's measurement framework

Five GEO metrics for online retail

Brand Mention Rate is useful, but it cannot describe the entire purchasing decision. These five author-defined indicators evaluate how AI progresses from product selection to a retailer recommendation.

PRR

Product Recommendation Rate

Frequency with which the target product or range is recommended.

SCR

Seller Criterion Rate

Whether AI independently adds criteria for choosing a seller.

RAR

Retailer Association Rate

Whether the relevant merchant is linked to the right benefit.

RRR

Retailer Recommendation Rate

Direct inclusion of a merchant among purchase options.

PPSR

Price Premium Survival Rate

Whether the recommendation holds when the exact item is cheaper elsewhere.

The sample, measurement rules, price comparisons and observation dates are agreed before the baseline is calculated. Conversion and order data help interpret the result.

How I work

Six stages of GEO for online stores and brands

I begin with commercial product queries and actual AI answers, then work through catalog data, buyer-focused pages and evidence sources. The plan reflects your business model and available resources.

  1. Measure the baseline

Test unbranded product searches, brand and model comparisons, pricing and seller selection across agreed AI interfaces.

Deliverable: prompt matrix, baseline answers and competitor set.

  2. Map product and seller choice

Classify product recommendations, incorrect SKUs and prices, cited sources and merchant advantages.

Deliverable: buyer-journey diagnosis and prioritized gaps.

  3. Audit catalog information

Check identifiers, Product/Offer data, stock, shipping, pricing, warranty and accessibility for search crawlers.

Deliverable: technical briefs for the catalog and feeds.

  4. Design intent-focused pages

Choose buyer tasks that deserve a stable page with useful selection guidance and maintainable product offers.

Deliverable: page structures and content specifications.

  5. Strengthen credible sources

Identify relevant specialist publications, comparison services, reviews and catalog references based on verified facts.

Deliverable: a sourcing and editorial action plan.

  6. Repeat comparable measurements

Track PRR, SCR, RAR, RRR, PPSR and accuracy using the same question set, with referral and order data where available.

Deliverable: a progress report and the next priorities.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about e-commerce GEO

How does GEO help an online store generate orders?

The audit identifies which products AI recommends and how it chooses merchants. We review catalog facts, prices, cited sources and the path to a sale, then compare later results with available referral, inquiry and order data.

What if a marketplace sells the same SKU for less?

Some shoppers value warranty, after-sales service, reliable delivery and product guidance. The advantages must be real and documented. If a marketplace wins on the important purchase conditions, the business may need to improve its commercial offer.

Should product brands work on both their website and marketplace offers?

The right balance depends on the business model. Brands first need to appear in relevant product recommendations; buyers then compare current offers from different sellers. Both steps can be measured.

Which catalog improvements matter for GEO?

Consistent identifiers, complete specifications, Product/Offer data, current prices and stock, shipping and warranty terms, and crawlable product details. Buyer-scenario pages should include maintained recommendations and accurate product references.

What do PRR, SCR, RAR, RRR and PPSR measure?

They are five additional metrics in my published framework: product recommendations, seller criteria, correct benefit-to-merchant association, retailer recommendations and recommendation stability when competing offers cost less.

How quickly can e-commerce GEO deliver results?

Baseline answers can be documented during the initial audit. Changes depend on competition, data quality and the speed of website and source improvements. Follow-up measurements use comparable prompts and methods; AI recommendation positions cannot be guaranteed.
